Welcome to The History Woman.
The History Woman site was started in February 2012 to tell new stories from the past (and some that are well known).
HistoryWoman went live on March 1st 2012 to celebrate Women's History Month.
The emphasis will be on Women's, Social, and Working Class History - those stories that the schools and history books often miss out on. The women, hopefully, will be role-models who made a positive contribution in employment, politics and particulary social reform work that benefited ordinary people. I haven't, as a rule included women whose claim to fame was only down to who they married, or those women whose contribution had a negative impact. So Lizzie Borden isn't included and not is Marie Antoinette. I'm sorry if anyone disagrees with my choices.
With a combination of stories from the past and a blog with regular items, The History Woman is a work in progress and new stories will be added regularly.
Helen Barton's profile can be found by clicking "Women's Stories", then choosing "Helen Barton". Mrs Barton will also be a regular feature on the blog.
Featuring on the Blog just now are:
Eleanor's Travel Journal - (normally updated every 3 or 4 days but currently on hold while other parts of the website are updated) - telling the story of Eleanor's annual holidays between 1957 & 1969.
The Helen Barton story - featured in "Women's Stories" with more detail to be added in the Blog.
Mini-Profiles - more information about some of the women on the birthdays list (which now has its own tab)
Birthdays - women in science, reform work, non-traditional occupations and other areas. At least one notable woman for every day of the year. (currently adding links to each of the names - so you can find out more)

I'd like to give special acknowledgement to the National Library of Australia, and their wonderful online archives, who set me on the trail of Helen Barton and other stories. In my opinion, the very best online archive available! Thank you NLA.
